Color Amazonia (2015)
Color Amazonia est un projet de recherche mené par l’artiste Susanna Mejia, qui recense les différentes plantes indigènes utilisées en Amazonie colombienne pour la teinture de fibres naturelles. Les couleurs des papiers et des fibres de sisal ont été obtenues à partir de ces plantes, grâce à la collaboration de l’artiste avec les communautés indigènes locales. Exploration artistique au départ, ce projet s’est élargi pour devenir une source de renouveau social dans ces communautés. Des ateliers de teinture mis sur pied par l’artiste dans la région de Leticia ont en effet stimulé l’intérêt d’éco-concepteurs locaux pour ces techniques anciennes.
Pendant ses études à l’Art Institute of Boston, Susana Mejia s’est spécifiquement intéressée à la couleur. Color Amazonia, un travail artistique et un projet de recherche botanique, est le prétexte à la célébration de la forêt tropicale en voie de disparition. Il a été présenté à Bogota en 2013 et à Medellín en 2014. Susana Mejia vit en Colombie.
Color Amazonia is an ongoing research project led by artist Susana Mejia on the dye plants native to the Columbian Amazon. The tinted papers and hanging fique fibres owe their palette to these plants and the artist’s collaboration with local indigenous communities. The project has grown from artistic exploration to social renewal in these communities as the dye workshop she established near the village of Leticia has garnered the interest of local eco-designers.
Born in Colombia, Susana Mejia’s recent solo exhibitions include presentations of Color Amazonia at Eafit in Medellin in 2014 and Flora Ars + natura in Bogota in 2013. Her installations have also been included in several group exhibitions in Colombia as well as at the recent exhibition “Waterweavers” at Bard Graduate Center in New York. As a student at The Art Institute of Boston, she was particularly interested in colour. As Mejia states, Color Amazonia is a social art practice and botanical research project in which colour is “a pretext to exalt the immense value of a jungle that is disappearing”.
