Je t’aime (2015)
L’œuvre de Kai Chan, Je t’aime, révèle sa beauté et sa signification par l’accumulation patiente de matériaux et par l’utilisation de techniques désarmantes de simplicité. À première vue composée d’un enchevêtrement aléatoire de fils suspendus, l’installation suit un plan précis dans lequel un réseau de lettres forme les mots « Je t’aime », créant une masse impénétrable qui cache le message et garde les visiteurs à la périphérie de l’œuvre. La phrase « Je t’aime », dite sans conviction, profondément ressentie ou rarement exprimée, relève à la fois du banal et du sublime. Le travail de Chan rappelle que même la plus exaltante des occupations demeure tributaire de détails ordinaires.
Diplômé de l’Ontario College of Art, Kai Chan a présenté ses œuvres au Canada, aux États-Unis, au Japon, en Australie et en Europe. L’artiste a reçu de nombreux prix et bourses, et l’exposition rétrospective de son œuvre, « Kai Chan: A Spider’s Logic », a été présentée au Québec, en Ontario, en Saskatchewan et en Nouvelle-Écosse. Kai Chan vit à Toronto.
Kai Chan’s work Je t’aime reveals its beauty and its meaning through the patient accumulation of single elements using disarmingly straightforward materials and techniques. The initial impact of the mass of blue dazzles while concealing its logic: rather than a seemingly random tangle, the build-up of hanging threads follows a grid outline of letters that form the phrase “Je t’aime”, creating an impenetrable mass that hides the message from view and keeps visitors on the room’s periphery. The phrase “je t’aime” – often perfunctorily offered but rarely felt or fervently felt but rarely expressed – is both banal and sublime. As such, it is a perfect parallel to Chan’s working mode and, indeed, of work itself: even the most exalted of occupations entails daily minutiae.
Toronto-based artist Kai Chan, a graduate from the Ontario College of Art, has exhibited his artwork has across Canada, US, Japan, Australia and Europe over a decades-long career. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the Jean A. Chalmers National Crafts Award and the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in the Fine Crafts. “Kai Chan: A Spider’s Logic”, a 35-year retrospective exhibition of his work, toured to Quebec, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nova Scotia from 2010 to 2013. His work was exhibited in the International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul in 2014.
