Attirer la lumière, an installation developed on-site at the Vieux Presbytère, stems from Fuglem’s research into historic Deschambault and certain details she was drawn to and whose reality is otherwise hidden. Using unspun flax threads and transparent or reflective materials to channel natural light, Fuglem re-imagines the official history of the Biennale site, creating a parallel world of subtle, barely perceptible elements. The use of the attic – a space traditionally used for storing things away out of view – is apt, as the artist seeks to elicit a sense of the unseen and a tangible connection to a forgotten past and its unanswerable questions.

Karilee Fuglem’s work takes the form of installations, drawings, photographs and artist books, through which she explores visual subtlety as a key to embodied perception. Originally from British Columbia, she has lived in Montreal since 1989, during which time she has presented solo exhibitions across Canada, notably at the Darling Foundry (Montreal) and the Koffler Gallery (Toronto), and in numerous group exhibitions, including the Biennale de Montréal in 1998 and 2011. Fuglem has also exhibited at the Musée national des beaux arts du Québec and the National Gallery of Canada, who hold her work in their collections. She is represented by Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain, where she has exhibited regularly since 2003.
