Para-Production | 2015
Les schémas de fabrication/consommation proposés par l’industrie textile mondiale sont au cœur de l’installation Para-Production de Ni Haifeng. Dans une version précédente de l’œuvre présentée en Belgique, l’artiste a voulu bouleverser le circuit habituel de production en utilisant des déchets textiles importés de Chine pour créer une gigantesque tapisserie assemblée par des bénévoles. Pour la BILP, Haifeng utilise une partie de cette tapisserie à laquelle s’ajoutent des rebuts produits par les derniers travailleurs du textile de la rue Chabanel à Montréal et ceux produits par la Caserne du lin de Saint-Léonard, récemment fermée, ajoutant un chapitre local à l’histoire du textile.
Le travail de Ni Haifeng reflète son intérêt pour les systèmes d’échange et de production propres à chaque culture. Diplômé de la Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, l’artiste a participé à des expositions individuelles et collectives en Europe, en Amérique et en Asie depuis 1988. Né à Zhoushan en Chine, Ni Haifeng travaille à Pékin et à Amsterdam, où il vit.
The history of colonial trade is exemplified locally by the introduction of Irish flax for household linen production in the 17th century and mass offshore production of clothing for current consumption. The global textile industry forms the context for Haifeng’s installation Para-Production, in which the flow of manufactured goods and capitalism’s logic of ‘useful’ labour are symbolically reversed. In a previous version exhibited in Belgium, textile waste from Chinese clothing factories were shipped to Europe and sewn into a massive tapestry by volunteers. Haifeng’s participatory project for the Biennale du lin incorporates scraps from some of the remaining textile workers on Chabanel Street in Montreal and from the now defunct Caserne du Lin in St. Leonard, adding a local chapter to textiles’ evolving story.
Ni Haifeng’s practice stems from an interest in cultural systems of exchange, return, production and language. A graduate of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art), he has exhibited his installation, photographic and video work in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, America and Asia since 1988. Ni Haifeng was born in Zhoushan, China and presently lives in Amsterdam and works in Amsterdam and Beijing. This installation at the Biennale du lin is the premier of Para-Production in North America.
