Le défi est un mot qui revient souvent dans le discours de Dinh Bá : le défi de créer, le défi d’innover, celui de trouver les textures, les matières, les lignes graphiques qu’il conçoit pour la femme actuelle. Le défi que lui impose la Biennale du lin consiste à faire l’expérience du lin, une matière qui ne fait pas partie de son quotidien et qu’il dit ne pas connaître assez bien. C’est d’ailleurs à l’aspect naturel du lin qu’il s’attache en s’inspirant d’un tronc d’arbre, bien enraciné au sol, petit mais fort, qui pousse tranquillement.
Dinh Bá Nguyen est né à Saigon au Viêtnam en 1975 et il est arrivé à Montréal à l’âge de huit ans. Déjà, pendant ses études en design de mode au Collège Lasalle, il représente le Canada au Concours International des Jeunes Créateurs à Paris. En début de carrière, il côtoie Lino Catalano et travaille chez Bégain et Mackage. En 2003, il lance sa propre ligne, une collection conçue et fabriquée au Québec. Avec sept collections éponymes à son actif, 34 points de vente à travers le Canada et l’ouverture d’une première boutique en mai 2007, Dinh Bá Nguyen s’est taillé une place de choix dans le monde canadien de la mode.
‘Challenge’ is a word that Dinh Bá’s uses frequently—the challenge of being innovative and of finding just the right textures, materials and stylistic lines that fit the modern woman. And now the Biennial du lin has posed a new challenge: that of working with linen, a fabric that is not a part of his usual array of materials—and one he says does not know well enough. It is however the raw natural appearance of linen that he drew him to the idea of a short, sturdy, deeply rooted tree trunk that reaches calmly towards the sky.
Born in Saigon in 1975, Dinh Bá Nguyen arrived in Montreal at the age of eight. During his studies in Fashion Design at LaSalle College, he was already ahead of the game, representing Canada in the International Competition of Young Fashion Designers in Paris. Early in his career he became acquainted with Lino Catalano and started working at Bégain and Mackage. In 2003, launched his own fashion line, a collection designed and manufactured in Quebec. With seven eponymous collections under his belt, 34 retail outlets across Canada offering his creations and with the opening of his first store in May 2007, Dinh Bá Nguyen has carved out for himself a choice niche in the Canadian fashion world.
