Dans sa pratique, Nancy McPhee privilégie le travail invisible. Ainsi, elle utilise régulièrement des broderies blanc sur blanc ou des structures tissées sur lesquelles une image ou un texte ne sont lisibles que d’un seul angle. Vu, l’installation de l’artiste conçue pour la BILP, explore une fois de plus cette dimension. Des images de mains en train de coudre deviennent floues à cause du mouvement du textile et de l’effet d’optique engendré par l’utilisation de tissu rayé – historiquement appelé étoffe du diable. Les rayures nuisent à la perception de l’image des mains, créant une élégante métaphore du labeur sous-jacent à la production d’un tissu.
Les notions de connaissance, de perception et de genre sont explorées par Nancy Anne McPhee dans ses dessins et ses installations de tissus et de papiers peints. L’artiste a obtenu une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia et a exposé en Amérique du nord, en Suisse et en Chine (Nantong). Nancy McPhee vit à Hamilton, en Ontario.

In her art practice, McPhee focuses on the notion of invisible work, often working with white-on-white embroidery or woven structures in which an image or text is only visible from one angle. Similarly, McPhee’s new banner installation Vu considers hidden labour through formal means. Images of hands sewing become ‘troubled’ through the movement of the fabric and the visual effect of coloured striped fabric – historically known as “the Devil’s Cloth”. Stripes prevent the fabric from being read in planes, so the hands are present but not visible, or are minimized, thus forming an elegant metaphor for the unseen labour of textiles.
Nancy Anne McPhee works with themes of knowledge, perception and gender through her large-scale drawings, theatrical performances and textile and wallpaper installations. She has a MFA from Concordia University and has exhibited her work in North America and internationally in commercial galleries, artist-run centres and public theatres. Her solo exhibition Nictitate opens in 2015 at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario and in 2014 she exhibited her work at Lausanne to Beijing: 8th International Fiber Art Biennale in Nantong, China. Originally from Alberta, McPhee is now based in Hamilton, Ontario.
