Screening (2015)
En présentant l’installation Screening, Wannes Goetschalckx intervient sur trois plans : une projection vidéo, la surface de projection elle-même et l’action de créer cette surface. Tournant en boucle, la vidéo montre l’artiste pendant qu’il construit un mur qui servira de surface de projection. Lors de sa performance présentée au vernissage de l’exposition, l’artiste a travaillé devant la projection de sa vidéo, se doublant lui-même pendant qu’il fabriquait in situ une succession de murs. Le nombre de murs réalisés a été déterminé par l’espace d’exposition disponible et par l’endurance à la tâche de l’artiste, un travail ramené à la simple équation espace, temps, énergie.
Wannes Goeschalkx jongle avec le temps et l’espace, à travers des tâches absurdes et répétitives qui repoussent les limites physiques de son corps. L’artiste est diplômé de l’Académie royale des beaux-arts et du Higher Institute for Fine Arts, à Anvers. Il a récemment participé à des expositions présentées au Musée M de Louvain, au Casino du Luxembourg et à la Tate Liverpool. Wannes Goeschalkx vit en Belgique
Screening, the title of Goetschalckx’s piece featuring projected video and live performance, refers to both a film projection, the projection surface itself and the action of creating that surface. Looping repeatedly from an empty white screen, the video shows the artist as he successively builds frame after frame, a simple projection screen. For the opening performance at the Biennale, the artist works in front of the projected video, effectively doubling himself while he constructs multiple layers of screens whose quantity is determined by the exhibition parameters and the artist’s endurance: work as a simple equation of space, time and energy.
Belgian artist Wannes Goetschalckx entertains ideas about the possibilities of time and (mental) space with his art work, which involves absurdist, Sisyphean-like repetitive tasks that push the physical limitations of his body. His performative installations include carving a 4.5 ton poplar tree trunk into a single toothpick by hand with a hammer and chisel and other, often humorous, durational works that entail DIY craftsmanship. Goetschalckx is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp and has recently participated in exhibitions at Museum M in Leuven, Casino Luxembourg and Tate Liverpool (UK).
