The Gold (2008-2009)

L’artiste a créé un double d’elle-même, qu’elle appelle The Gold, la Dorée. Durant une performance qu’elle a exécutée le jour du vernissage, Eirún, revêtue d’une carapace faite de laine et de lin, crochète des tresses de savoir qui émergent du casque laineux qui recouvre sa tête. À la technique traditionnelle maîtrisée par les femmes, l’artiste ajoute la connaissance, territoire masculin. Araignée ou papillon, elle s’enrobe dans une sorte de cocon, métaphore d’un enfermement passager, un passage vers une autre étape. Elle tisse sa propre enveloppe, qu’on peut rapprocher d’un suaire ou du revêtement d’une momie, sarcophage ou bandelettes, qui dessine la forme générale du corps sans en révéler les détails.
The artist created a double of herself, that she called The Gold. During her performance on the day of the opening, Eirún, wearing a shell of wool and linen, crocheted braids of knowledge that emerged from the woollen helmet on her head. To the traditional technique mastered by women, the artist added knowledge, a male domain. A spider or butterfly, she wrapped herself in a sort of cocoon, a metaphor for a transitory shutting in, a transition to another stage. She wove her own envelope, which can be likened to a shroud or the covering of a mummy—the sarcophagus or the linen strips—that forms the general shape of the body without revealing its details.
Eirún Sigurdardóttir vit et travaille en Islande. Elle a étudié au Collège islandais des arts et métiers et à l’École des beaux-arts de Berlin. Ses œuvres s’attachent à l’expérience féminine et aux rapports entre nature et culture. Elle fait partie du collectif The Icelandic Love Corporation, fondé en 1996, qui regroupe trois artistes islandaises cherchant à abolir les barrières entre l’artiste et le spectateur lors d’interventions dans des endroits publics. À travers des œuvres et des performances puisant dans l’humour et dans l’absurde, la ILC veut donner une alternative à la froide réalité du monde technologique et de la culture de la consommation.
Eirún Sigurdardottir lives and works in Iceland. She studied at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and at the Berlin University of the Arts. Her works deal with the female experience and with the relationship between nature and culture. She belongs to The Icelandic Love Corporation, founded in 1996, a group of three Icelandic artists who strive to eliminate the barriers between artist and spectator during interventions in public places. Through works and performances that draw on humour and the absurd, ILC want to provide an alternative to the cold reality of the technological world and consumer culture.
