Seven Days Work (2015)
Ouvrir, lancer, fermer, battre; ouvrir, lancer, fermer, battre. Le rythme des sons et des mouvements du tisserand John-Paul Morabito envahit le jubé de l’église de Deschambault pendant sa résidence de performance. L’artiste travaille jour après jour de 9 h à 17 h et chaque heure de production sur le métier est marquée par les sons de l’orgue qui lui indiquent de changer le motif du tissage. Les visiteurs sont invités à changer les bobines de différentes couleurs et à les donner au tisserand, introduisant un élément de hasard dans un schéma qui est à la base monochrome et contrôlé. Le tissu est donc le journal de la rencontre entre le tisserand et le visiteur.
Formé comme designer textile commercial, John Paul Morabito utilise la précision du tissage industriel dans ses performances de création textile. Ses œuvres ont été exposées aux États-Unis et à Kherson (Ukraine). Son travail a aussi été présenté dans divers magazines. L’artiste détient une maîtrise en beaux-arts du Art Institute de Chicago; il y enseigne au Department of Fiber and Material Studies.
Open, throw, close, beat; open, throw, close, beat. The rhythmic sounds and movement of the weaver fill the upper balcony of the church in Deschambault during John-Paul Morabito’s durational performance Days Work. Clocking in from 9 am to 5 pm, the artist works day after day, timing each hour of production at the loom by the sounds of the church organ that signal him to change weave pattern. Visitors are invited to wind bobbins of assorted colours to give to the weaver, introducing an element of chance into an otherwise monochromatic and controlled schema. The textile becomes a diary of the weaver’s body and the presence of the viewer, thereby transforming labour and social interaction into material.
Initially trained as a commercial textile designer, John Paul Morabito now uses the precision and rigour of industrial weaving for durational, performance-based textile work. His work has been exhibited at numerous venues including Snyderman-Works Gallery (Philadelphia), Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester), Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (Pittsburgh), Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn) and the Local Lore Museum in Kherson, Ukraine. Publications include Surface Design Journal, Fiberarts Magazine and American Craft Magazine. He holds a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he currently teaches in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies.
