Les refondateurs (2015)
L’œuvre de Valérie Bédard, Les refondateurs, est composée d’images tissées en noir et blanc de ses compagnons artisans et de leur famille. L’artiste utilise des fils de lin, de laine et de soie pour créer un portrait de cette communauté grandissante d’artisans. Une fois terminés, les tissages sont suspendus dans des cadres métalliques dont la forme évoque des bâtiments traditionnels. L’artiste, en rendant hommage à la génération d’entrepreneurs créateurs qui participent au renouveau rural, crée un lien entre les savoir-faire perdus et les espoirs de la communauté en l’avenir. De son œuvre émerge une représentation de l’identité culturelle de la région et d’un patrimoine en devenir.
Valérie Bédard est spécialisée dans le tissage, qu’elle enseigne à la Maison des métiers d’art de Québec depuis 2008. Ses créations ont été présentées notamment au Centre MATERIA, à la galerie Art Neuf et à la Guilde des Métiers d’art. Elle a obtenu divers prix et bourses. Originaire de Rivière-Trois-Pistoles, Valérie Bédard vit à Deschambault-Grondines.

A new Deschambault resident, Valérie Bédard is part of a contemporary rural renewal taking place in the region. Her work, Les refondateurs, features woven black and white images of fellow local artisans and their families, using local linen thread, raw flax, horse hair and rag strips to create a portrait of this growing network of makers. The finished weavings are hung in shaped metal frames that reference farm buildings and heritage buildings associated with the families. This new generation of creative entrepreneurs is creating a link between lost savoir-faire and the community’s hopes for the future; through her work, they embody the region’s cultural identity and prospective heritage.
Originally from Rivière-Trois-Pistoles and now residing in Deschambault-Grondines, Valérie Bédard specialises in weaving, which she has taught at the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec since 2008. Her creative practice includes the creation of original works and unique objects, the production of limited edition functional items and workshop instruction within the school system. She has participated in group exhibitions at Centre MATERIA, Galerie Art Neuf and Canadian Guild of Crafts, among others. Bédard has received recognition for her work, including the Prix Métiers d’art de la relève at Salon des artisans de Québec and a SODEC acquisition grant, both in 2010.
